Eco-Shiva Nataraja
Home
Here we go with another of my twists on accepted iconographies. The handsome and often horny young Hindu god Shiva is continually generating the world,--with the green drum in his middle right hand. He’s also continually destroying the world with the flame in his middle left hand. I dunno why he is so much more often called “Shiva the Destroyer” than “Shiva the Creator”. But anyhow, lest this destruction worry the faithful he is usually shown making the abhaya mudra gesture. All while he dances,( “Nataraja” means “king of the dance”,-- of being / nonbeing, etc.), on the back of the Demon. A tiger was once sent against him, back in those old days when even a god might worry about a tiger, and also a snake. The snake accompanies him, and he wears the tiger skin. His lips are bluish from once passing the poisoned oceans of the world through his body and so purifying all the waters of Earth. But no more of this caretaker stuff for my Shiva! He’s seated, laid back, and makes no abhaya mudra gesture. Instead, his upper two hands gesture, “ Hey. You humans claim some wisdom now. Take care of your own ‘Spaceship Earth. Howzat grab ya?”’
